The word Kargil is made up of two words – kar or khar means palace and keel stands for centre. If you read these words together, the meaning comes out – a place between palaces.
Kargil is situated at a distance of about 210 Km from Leh city and 205 km from Srinagar.Thus th city is situated between Leh and Srinagar. The road from Kargil to Dras and Kargil to Suru Valley is also remains opened throughout the year but from December to March, this route becomes extremely dangerous, because landslides can occur in these areas at any time.
