A ship about to Sail: Jahaz Mahal
Floating with its own reflection and fascinating the audience, the Jahaz Mahal in Mandu still showcasing the glory of ancient Malwa.
Situated in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, Mandu’s Jahaz Mahal is now the centre of attraction among tourists. The Jahaz Mahal was built in 15th century by Mandu Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji, who ruled Mandu for 31 years. He was having a large harem (about 15000 women) and therefore he wanted a proper accommodation for all of them. For this purpose, Jahaz Mahal was built.
The palace is 110 meters long and 15 meters in width. It is a double-storeyed structure which is situated on a narrow strip of land in between Munj Talao and Kapur Talao. And that’s why it is giving the impression that the palace is floating and about to sail.
This small palace is a nice example of creative imagination realized on the ground. All the passages, windows of this building were designed with arches in different designs. Similarly, various creative design patterns can be observed in the look of water tanks (Baoli), flooring and small openings of the wall. At some places, we can see narrow by artistically designed water channels through the water was passed. Different colour combinations were used in floor tiles that given an impression of ornamentation. Terrace bears paintings of floral motifs.
