What does Kargil stands for?

The word Kargil is made up of two words – kar or khar means palace and keel stands for centre. If you read these words together, the meaning comes out – a place between palaces.

 Kargil is situated at a distance of about 210 Km from Leh city and 205 km from Srinagar.Thus th city is situated between Leh and Srinagar. This location develops extra pleasure among the tourists as they can also see the mountainous and rocky landscape of Leh and the greenery of Srinagar and its unique beauty together from here.

Knowledge of the weather is important

It is an extreme Cool weather region.Before going to these areas, knowledge of the weather is necessary.It is a chily place where  plenty of snowfall takes place regularly, so it is better to avoid if you are planning to visit Srinagar between November and April.During this period,the road from Srinagar to Leh is closed due to excessive snowfall. However, you can visit here all the way through Leh . Even if the road is closed, the army opens it in a short time. The road from Kargil to Dras and Kargil to Suru Valley is also remains opened throughout the year but from December to March, this route becomes extremely dangerous, because landslides can occur in these areas at any time.

You can enjoy it in the rain. The best thing is that you can come here in every season.Reaching here, during the rains, is not as difficult as the rest of the hill cities, because the rainfall is less and the risk of landslides etc. is relatively less. The road condition of Kargil are good.

When and how to reach?

The months of May and June are best for visiting Kargil. Kargil is located near Srinagar and is easily accessible by road.

The nearest airports to Kargil are Leh and Srinagar. These airports are well connected from many cities in India.

The nearest rail link to Kargil is Jamutavi railway station, which is located at a distance of about 480 km. This railway station is connected to many cities of the country.

Kargil can be reached by the Srinagar-Leh road link. The route remains open from mid-June to November. Normal and deluxe buses of Jammu and Kashmir State Transport Corporation plies on this route regularly, through which Kargil can be reached. Apart from this,one can reach also by taxi from Srinagar and Leh.
